Helping Couples Achieve Fertility

AUSTIN, TX—In August 2010, Parviz Kavoussi, M.D., joined St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, alongside his father, K.M. Kavoussi, M.D., and his brother, Shahryar Kavoussi, M.D. This family of physicians specializes in all aspects of fertility and reproductive medicine, focusing on both the female and male factors that can affect fertility in couples.

“Our patients really like having all of these services offered in one office because it ensures that everyone is on the same page, so to speak,” Dr. Parviz Kavoussi said. “Examining infertility from both sides is the more effective, and less expensive, approach.”

As a team of physicians, the Kavoussi physicians are the only fertility team in Austin with fellowship-trained specialists in male and female infertility and reproductive medicine.

Dr. Parviz Kavoussi grew up in the Austin area and has returned to practice here after having completed his residency in urology and a two-year fellowship in andrology—male infertility, sexual medicine and microsurgery (vasectomy reversals)—at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He is only one of five physicians in the country to complete this type of fellowship annually.

Dr. Parviz Kavoussi received his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and subsequently completed his residency training at Texas A&M Health Science Center, Scott & White Memorial Hospital. His publications have included textbook chapters, as well as peer-reviewed articles in multiple journals. He has also taught post-graduate courses at national meetings and has a seat on the American Society of Andrology Public Affairs and Policy Committee to guide and promote the best clinical practices in the areas of male infertility and sexual medicine.

His research interests include basic science work in erectile dysfunction and male infertility, in addition to his clinical interests in the field of reproductive medicine.

“The incidence of male infertility is increasing annually, due possibly to our exposure to toxins in the environment,” Dr. Parviz Kavoussi said. “I have found that, in treating couples who have difficulty conceiving, a male factor is involved about 50 percent of the time. That is why it’s important to provide comprehensive care for couples.”

His father, Dr. K.M. Kavoussi, has been providing care for infertility and gynecology patients in the Austin area for more than 25 years. After his residency training at the Bayview campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, he completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Maryland. He has extensive experience performing laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures, such as ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), da Vinci robot-assisted tubal reversals and myomectomies, reconstructive operative laparoscopy with harmonic ultrasound, and hysteroscopic restoration of the uterine cavity to treat infertility.

His brother, Dr. Shahryar Kavoussi, completed his residency training at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and a three-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is board-certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. His clinical interests in the field of reproductive medicine include in vitro fertilization (IVF), ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), da Vinci robot-assisted tubal reversals and myomectomies, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and uterine anomalies.

“Our father has worked in the field for more than two decades,” Dr. Parviz Kavoussi said. “He has always loved this specialty, and it must have rubbed off on my brother. I actually started out working in general urology, but eventually found myself gravitating toward reproductive medicine as well. This has been a very exciting opportunity for this family of physicians to help others build families of their own.”
