Erectile Dysfunction

Over 30 million men in the United States suffer from erectile dysfunction (the inability to achieve or maintain an erection satisfactory for intercourse).  This number is projected to double in the next 20 years.

The majority of Dr. Kavoussi’s research has focused on erectile dysfunction and he is committed to treating patients suffering from this difficult problem to help improve the quality of life for these men and their partners. The good news is that nearly every case is treatable.

At AFRM we offer a gamut of treatment options for erectile dysfunction ranging from medical to local to surgical therapy, including expertise in penile prosthesis implants. We will cater therapy for what is most appropriate for the individual patient to improve the couples’ quality of life. Options for treatment include oral medications (PDE5-inhibitors such as Viagra, Levitra, Cialis), vacuum erectile devices, urethral suppositories, injections, and penile prosthetics. The prosthetic implant selected will be selected on an individual basis and include the options of malleable devices (bendable) and inflatable devices.

In addition to his clinical interests in the field of reproductive medicine, Dr. Kavoussi has been involved in basic science research which focused on alternate pathways that may cause erectile dysfunction as well as ground breaking work on how prostate cancer surgery may result in erectile dysfunction at the cellular level in an animal model.

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease is the growth of fibrous plaques in the tunica albuginea (the fibrous envelope around the erectile bodies in the penis) resulting in an abnormal curvature in the penis.  This can interfere with the man’s ability to have intercourse.  It can occur independently from or concomitantly with erectile dysfunction.  Peyronie’s can be an extremely frustrating issue, but one that does have solutions. We offer surgical therapy for Peyronie’s disease to correct the curvature of the penis to allow for resumption of intercourse, improvement of cosmesis, and resolution of pelvic pain in the partner.

Hypogonadism/Low sex drive/Low testosterone

We offer evaluation and treatment of low testosterone. At least 13 million men suffer from the effects of low testosterone in the United Sates a year. From the age of 35, men can lose between 1-2% of their testosterone a year which can result in worsened erectile function, decreased sex drive, depressed mood, tiredness, lack of motivation, sleep disturbances, worsened spatial cognition, hot flashes, decreased fertility, increased fat mass, decreased muscle mass, decreased bone mass, worsened cholesterol levels, and deterioration of skin and hair. We at AFRM advocate replacing testosterone in these men after carefully evaluating each individual man, to help improve their quality of life by improving body composition and strength, increasing bone mineral density, improving cholesterol parameters, improving sexual desire and erectile function, and improving energy levels and decreasing fatigue. Men can be treated with other oral medications as well to maintain fertility while allowing testosterone levels to increase. Men who are no longer interested in fertility can be treated with direct testosterone replacement by multiple modalities including topical gels, injections, and testosterone pellet insertion beneath the skin (Testopel®).
